Dr. Jennifer Winn grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia but spent many family vacations visiting Ottawa. In 2000, she moved to the capital to attend Carleton University. She completed her Bachelor of Science Honours in Biology and Biotechnology in 2005 and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2007. Dr. Winn then moved to Chicago to pursue her Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry. During her studies, she had the opportunity to work with experienced doctors helping to provide care for a variety of patients, including those with advanced ocular diseases and low vision conditions.
While in Chicago, Dr. Winn completed an internship at the Illinois Eye Institute in the Pediatric and Binocular Vision department where she conducted complete eye exams, visual efficiency exams and vision therapy sessions for both children and adults. She also worked closely with doctors at the Illinois Eye Institute Cornea Center for Clinical Excellence where she was trained to manage advanced corneal diseases and fit a wide variety of contact lenses.
After graduating, Dr. Winn moved back to Ottawa and opened her own optometry clinic in 2012.
Dr. Winn has successfully completed both the Canadian Standard Assessment of Optometry and the American National Board Examination of Optometry. She is certified in the use of topical therapeutic pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of eye disease. She is a member and current co-chair of the Ottawa Society of Optometrists, the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
As an optometry student, she worked with both the Gift of Sight in Chicago and Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity in LaBarca, Mexico. Today, she is a frequent volunteer with OneSight, a charitable organization that brings vision care centres and clinics to under-served communities around the world.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Winn enjoys travelling, swimming, reading and catching a great movie.
